I have a project in mind that will be a small(<300 tags), self contained system that needs to have reporting, logging, real-time trending, and a fairly flexible front end. One of the things that my boss wants is "real nice looking graphics." It also shouldn't be more than $5k and the lower the cost the better. I have used iFIX 5.1 and Historian and while it got the job done it felt like I was using a wet noodle to paint the mona lisa.

Any options out there that I should be going for?

I have used the Wonderware program InTouch with success. Their latest version is InTouch 2012. I'm not sure about costing but give them a try: http://global.wonderware.com/EN/Pages/ContactSales.aspx.
