Has anyone ever designed, or seen installed, a set of light curtains (or other complex safety device) in an intrinsicaly safe area?

If yes, how was it done and what products were used for barriers?

Thanks.

I just tried to find something and didn't have any luck. The issue is the power level required by the light curtains is too high for an intrinsic barrier. There are explosion proof housings for light curtains. Leuze Compact EX1 is an explosion proof housing. Go to http://www.leuzeusa.com/downloads/las/download-01_en.html and download the COMPACT EX1 manual. Be aware...these are very expensive, and the installation contractor must use explosion proof conduit and fittings (also expensive)

I haven't seen it for light curtains, but AB does make intrinsically safe galvanic isolators (see 897H series). Also, I have used Flex EX for intrinsically safe I/O. Be aware that you need a special power supply for this and its a bit of a monster to mount.

Finally, the only EX project I worked on had a number of guard doors on them. To get around the issue of sparks, we used all non contact and epoxy enclosed door switches - which we also mounted outside the equipment enclosure...
